I planted an English oak tree from seed about 4 years ago, it is now about 8ft tall. I would like to up root it and move it to another location.

Any tips on how to give the tree the best chance of survival? Best time of year etc?

Autumn / Winter would be best. Largest rootball you can move to reduce root disturbance, but from memory Oaks have a taproot? if so that may hinder your ability to transplant it successfully.

It's very difficult to move established oaks. Their taproots, quickly, go down a long way and you will need to get as much of it as possible out of the ground. I've known even two year old oaks (thank you, squirrels ) to have a taproot 2ft deep!

Right. Get your bulldozer crew to dig eight feet around it and ten feet down. Then get your helicopters to gently lift it to the new home. Have an even larger crater waiting for it which you have nourished for three years with compost, leaf mold etc. Lower the tree in. Bulldozer team may have finished breakfast, lunch and tea breaks by now so have them fill in around the tree if they really don't mind. Then bring in the elephants and have them squirt water from their trunks around the tree. Keep the elephants there to enrich the soil with their dung.
If this doesn't work get back to me for instructions on how to move your house further away from the tree. :)
