Tomato problems

Hi, Iv'e been growing tomatos for years with no real problems.

But this year I have a problem,I was wondering if anyone on here could help me please.

They have blisters on the stems and some of the fruits are turning black. The rest of the plants look fine.

Blossom end rot or Black end rot


its all to do with watering regularly and not letting them dry out as the small feeder roots close to the surface cant take in the calcium.

Epsom salts is the quick fix

How are you growing them ? pots, grow bag and how much space between each plant
and what compost are you using

Thanks for the reply.I grow them in four plant grow bags,but I only put two plants in each,they are evergreen growbags
Regarding epsom salt,how much do I use and how often.

Isn't epsom salts for magnesium deficiency?

I've always put blossom end rot down to being dry at the roots.

But never known blossom end rot to create blisters on the stems????

If those blisters are black also, could it be blight?

Blossom rot, also known as blossom end rot, afflicts many garden-grown vegetables, but is most troublesome in tomatoes. Once a tomato shows the first symptoms, it's too late to save that fruit. Fortunately, quick action can usually prevent blossom rot in the next flush of tomatoes to form on that plant. Because blossom end rot is a symptom of a calcium deficiency in the plant, Epsom salts, which supply calcium, can be part of the solution.

 

I had a feeling it was a grow bag they just dry out so quickly , I do use a bag which I am at the moment 100lt mulitipurpose that I am using in the mini plastic greenhouse for my Manx Marvels, yes on the large side but its fits in perfectly and no problems watering and come the Autumn will be used to top dress the borders so for £3.95 a bargain.

I have in the past use a desert spoon in a watering can but that was for about 8 plants wont do them any harm if not correct with the measure worth a go.
And @pete is correct as well epsom salts for magnesium deficiency.

'Blisters' on the stems may be an attempt by the plant to make roots from the stem because the plant's root system has failed (and it's trying to make more roots above soil level)

Can you post a pic of the 'blisters'? (or sacrifice a plant to checkout the roots?). If they are raised bumps then it's probably trying to make more roots.

Are they wilting?

Hi everyone
I have been told at my local garden centre that it is blossom end rot.Thanks to everybody that have replied to my question.
Hopefully they should be ok now,I'l have to make sure I keep them moist from now on.

One of the pics might be blossom end rot, not sure about the others.
The callouses on the stems is something else.
