Hi everyone. I saw a lovely garden the other day which had loads of window boxes full to bursting with wildflowers. They were stunning! I would like to do this for next year so was wondering how best to do it. I don't have a greenhouse (although am contemplating one) and I'm not sure when to plant, how many seeds to plant etc. Will I need to cover them too and for how long?

    Thank you :)

    Great idea!

The only wildflowers I have planted were in the ground - I just scattered them in the Spring and up they popped!

I would imagine that the same would be true of window boxes? But, if I were to do it, I think my approach would be:- scatter the seeds over compost in pots. Then, when they grow, pop the pots into the window boxes. While I was waiting for the wild flowers, I would have pots of miniature daffs or some such. During the winter, maybe some pretty ivy in pots?

My point is, if you fill your window box with soil and then scatter, you will have many months of nothingness. By putting suitably sized pots of things into the boxes (maybe infill the gaps with teeny stones?) you can alter your window box contents with the seasons and they are easily transferrable. :)

      Hello! :)

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it. Great ideas! I was going to just scatter wildflowers but I wondered if the birds might eat them?! The last time I scattered seeds there was nothing left the next day! I think I'll do what you advise and plant them in pots first and then plant them into the window boxes when they are ready. When do you think would be the correct time to put them into the pots and should I keep them inside or just leave them out?

      Thanks again!
