Hello everyone, my name is Lorraine I am 20 years old and living in South Wales. I recently moved from Manchester, a 1 bed flat to a three bedroom house in Swansea, along with a garden :lollol:

There is still quite alot to do with the garden before I can start growing anything in there, the previous owners left it in a right state and with the weather the last few weeks, its hard to get it all done :(

I would like to grow some of our own veg, and just generally have a beautiful garden :gnthb:

I am new to the whole gardening thing so please be gentle with me :flag:

Looking forward to chatting to you all and hopefully learning more about my garden

Hi and welcome. Don't be daunted by an overgrown, out of control garden. If there's nothing in it that you particularly want to keep then it is easy to clear, it just doesn't seem that way when you look at it, but once you get started you'll be surprised at how quickly you make progress with it.

Nice to meet you Pippa and thanks for adding me as a friend :D

Hello clueless1 you are so right, at the moment it is full of weeds mainly, we have managed to cut all the grass so it is starting to look a little better. We have a problem with knotweed at the moment, and I hear that it is almost impossible to get rid of... we did pull alot out from the roots but it seems to be coming back already!

Knotweed is one of those nasty weeds that propagates readily from just about any piece of root or stem left in the ground. There was a patch of ground near us that had it, some contractors came every month or so to spray it with a systemic herbicide. The newsletter didn't tell us what chemical they used but a search about the internet suggests glyphosate (the active ingredient in the likes of Round-Up) was the one.

Unfortunately it took them ages, nearly a year to be precise, but I'm sure there must be a way that you can work your garden without waiting until its fully sorted. Why not start a new thread specifically describing the problem, I'm sure someone here will have a solution for you.
