Found you via a web search for gardening forums as I want to learn.

I have a small rather steep back garden that faces west but has light from south, and north. To the east there is the house and to the west there are a few trees in the gardens next to and behind it which tend to make the back shady, but not dark.

The house to the south does block some light and as the garden is very overgrown the hedges and trees in there are slowly cutting the amount of light that reaches my garden so eventually its going to be in mostly shade.

My front garden faces east but gets light all day as nothing is in the way to the south, just in evening when sun is behind the house is it in shade.

The annoying thing is I want to plant in my back as can sit out there and enjoy it but in the front we have a busy main road so not exactly where I would want to sit and enjoy my plants. Still have things out there of course and enjoy them I am trying to grow hedges to give me privacy with mixed success - we are in a conservation area so fences cannot be higher than 1m tall.

I love pottering about but as I am as yet unsure what should go where I have everything in pots large and small so that if I find something doesn't seem to be doing well in one place I can easily move it - my strawberries were moved that many times I found the perfect place for them - they are not in a pot but a pallet I have lined and stood up so they grow in each pocket . My fruit bushes and rhubarb are the only things actually in the ground in the back.

I want to learn how to take cuttings so don't have to keep buying plants, I don't have a greenhouse so can only grow a few things from seed- in pots with plastic bags over them.

I admit its taken over my life - I started to garden to get me out of the house as have some health problems that stop me going out and about and although at first I had to force myself to go out there and work now I cannot wait and am so annoyed with myself when health will not let me:)

Welcome to GC Asha. Once gardening gets a hold there's no giving it up! :)

Try speaking to your neighbours about reducing the height of the hedges, perhaps offering to trim them yourself may help them make up their minds.
