    Hi

I have a young Rowan tree about eight to ten feet tall which has been in the ground since late 2007. It seems to be doing well this year but was wondering if I should prune back some of the lower young branches.

There would be no harm in pruning off some branches to give it a better shape.

    Thanks

What should I use to cut the branches to minimise damage to the tree, secatuers or just a saw.

It is probably best to wait until winter, when there are less fungal spores and bacteria around to infect the wounds, and the absence of leaves will give you a better view of what you're doing.

Then if it was me I'd just use secatuers for the thinner branches, loppers for anything thicker, and a saw for anything loppers can't get through.

A sharp pruning saw for anything over a half inch. Keep the pruning to a minimum.
