I got 16 and all the history right too, but beg to differ on the answer to one of the questions which I got right even though I think it's wrong.

I got 19 but I disagreed with the one I got wrong. Who defeated the Vikings? King Harold or Alfred the Great. I said King Harold because of Stamford Bridge, 3 days before the Battle of Hastings. As far as I remember, King Alfred was just a useless baker! :) btw, I've been out of the country for 40 years. I must still remember a bit!

That's the question I had an issue with Kindred! Alfred only defeated the Vikings in the south of the country, but I chose that because the other two didn't come close. Definitely not Harold or Edward. It was either William I (Conqueror) or later.......I'm actually reading about this at the moment.

I got 18 but why on earth does anyone think these are relevant questions for new citizens to be able to answer? They may be nice to know but what are they testing? I'm sure we could come up with better questions - yes that's a challenge folks.

I got 12. I doubted some of the 'right' answers on the ones I got wrong, but wasn't totally sure. There was one that I 100% disagree with though. It was the one asking who has more power out of the house of commons and the house of lords. According to the quiz, the commons have more power.

I got 20 but can't see the point in asking such irrelevant questions.

A friend of ours is Japanese, married to an Englishman, and has had to take a lot of stringent 'citizenship' tests. These tests were not just to get citizenship status but to get her visitor's visa renewed. The silly thing is that there are different departments that administer 'citizenship' and 'Visa'. She's got her citizenship, now, but the visa department are still demanding that she has more exams to renew her visa - which she doesn't need!

Although some of the tests were pretty tough it only required some hard studying as they give you a big book with lots of questions and answers. It's just a matter of being able to read English.

She reads, and writes it, better than most natives :heehee: but she has quite a strong accent. She'd have got 20 right in this test and also questioned the relevance of it.

Now, if they asked questions such as 'who won the F.A. cup this year?' I'd get deported to a country that doesn't play football :loll: If they asked questions about the songs of the 50's and 60's I'd be made king :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

You're mixing up Harald and Harold. :) :) Harold was English; Harald was a Viking. Harold was killed at the Battle of Hastings when an arrow flew into his eye. Harald was killed at Stamford Bridge.

                From Wikipedia.

The Battle of Hastings was fought on 14 October 1066 between the Norman-French army of Duke William II of Normandy and an English army under the Anglo-Saxon King Harold II, during the Norman conquest of England. It took place approximately 7 miles (11 kilometres) north-west of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex, and was a decisive Norman victory.
The background to the battle was the death of the childless King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, which set up a succession struggle between several claimants to his throne. Harold was crowned king shortly after Edward's death, but faced invasions by William, his own brother Tostig and the Norwegian King Harald Hardrada (Harold III of Norway). Hardrada and Tostig defeated a hastily gathered army of Englishmen at the Battle of Fulford on 20 September 1066, and were in turn defeated by Harold at the Battle of Stamford Bridge five days later. The deaths of Tostig and Hardrada at Stamford left William as Harold's only serious opponent. While Harold and his forces were recovering from Stamford, William landed his invasion forces in the south of England at Pevensey on 28 September 1066 and established a beachhead for his conquest of the kingdom. Harold was forced to march south swiftly, gathering forces as he went.
The exact numbers present at the battle are unknown; estimates are around 10,000 for William and about 7,000 for Harold. The composition of the forces is clearer; the English army was composed almost entirely of infantry and had few archers, whereas only about half of the invading force was infantry, the rest split equally between cavalry and archers. Harold appears to have tried to surprise William, but scouts found his army and reported its arrival to William, who marched from Hastings to the battlefield to confront Harold. The battle lasted from about 9 am to dusk. Early efforts of the invaders to break the English battle lines had little effect; therefore, the Normans adopted the tactic of pretending to flee in panic and then turning on their pursuers. Harold's death, probably near the end of the battle, led to the retreat and defeat of most of his army. After further marching and some skirmishes, William was crowned as king on Christmas Day 1066.

No, I said Saxon Harold defeated Viking Harald.

But where it gets complicated is The Normans were descendents of Vikings so they won in the end (so Oliver Cromwell might be another correct answer).
