Not sure that they were defeated, they certainly infiltrated first as there seem to be lots of viking genes in the UK population.

Alfred The Great defeated the Vikings at Great Amwell (a little village just south of Ware in Hertfordshire). There's a commemoration plaque at the church there. I thought everyone would know that!!! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Ware was on Ermine Street, the Roman road from London to Lincoln. It has been said that Ware is one of the oldest continuously occupied sites in Europe.

The modern name of the town dates from the Anglo-Saxon period when weirs were built to stop the invading Vikings from escaping in their longships after defeat by Alfred The Great in a battle near Ware.

Alfred and the Norse King 'Guthrum the Old' partitioned England between them with the 'Treaty of Alfred and Guthrum'.

And before someone asks, I wasn't one of the signatories :old: :loll:

Surely then the Vikings were repelled, pushed back to where they came from, that's not defeated in my book.:)

I thought the Viking leader converted to Christianity, was treated like a son by Alfred, and ended up ruling 1/3 of England after the treaty gave him East Anglia, most of Mercia etc which became the Danelaw?

I think there may be some confusion here, are we definitely talking Vikings (Norwegians) or perhaps Danes?

I got 14 too. Not bothered either way - I'm off as soon as I can get me 'ands on me pension!

On the plus side, I flew through the GCSE English and Science tests that were there too!

I failed one test . It was that I didn't spot there were two other tests! :loll:

Once you had pointed out they were there, it was a doddle :blue thumb:

Having read approx. 18,000 books over the last 60 years tends to leave a lot of info embedded somewhere in the 'little grey cells'. :heehee: Though it doesn't do anything to help make me be able to do practical things
