was just looking at your pics again for side trellis on each side looks like when you extend trellis right to the top those nails should bang in at the top, then at the front looks like you can do the same and some parts use string to tie the trellis.
maybe make a wood frame for all your balcony will make it easy to attach trellis

Sorry to butt in to the thread - Rosa have you used those nails to attach trellis to brick/concrete walls or just wood ? Am looking for something to put trellis up with and wondered if you had had much success with those

I'm thinking about using this as a base for the floor.

Is it best to have 4x4 underneath for air circulation and water drainage ? ( basically a gap underneath. )

    Regards.

Have no idea if decking would be suitable for a balcony but yes its usually installed above ground to prevent the wood rotting. I will though say it gets VERY slippy when wet/covered in algea.

Oh I see, well thats useful information I wanted to know. Maybe I'll reconsider in having decking then.

    Many thanks.

    Regards.

Does anyone know the best form of deterrent for pigeons?

I've read that scarecrows, cats, snakes and owls of real-life structure are most appropriate.

Which one would be best? Has anyone had personal experience.

    Regards.

hi sam i used them nails at top of my balcony when i put trellis at top and top is concrete not wood.

blind that flooring will look great on your balcony floor i was going to use that but seeing that i already had my pots etc on balcony it was going to be a nightmare to move everything so tiles were best option for me and i had to lift some pots so that my brother could fit each tile in place.
i was just thinking once you place the trellis around front and sides the pidgeons might be put off landing on your balcony, get a few mobiles to hang up, ive never had pidgeons on my balcony, ive had some blue tits but since my balcony has been really covered i dont get birds on it now

With the decking we have to pressure wash ours each year and then stain/treat it and even then its till a death trap in the winter on the deck path we have, purely because it just gets to slippy.

If you dont get any rain coming in on the balcony then you might be ok but otherwise I probably wouldnt recommend it as you have no way of pressure washing it up there.

During the summer months its fine though - its the winter that it becomes like an ice-skating ring out there lol

Another option could be decking tiles. These come pre-done (ie already raised off the floor) and if they fit ok size wise, you could then take them in to wash them off and treat them annually. It wouldnt stop them getting slippy but at least you would be able to sort them out easier ... maybe ?

Sounds like a good alternative. I will have to do some research into sizes due to the shape of my balcony floor.

    Regards.

Would a wind chime do the trick ?

    Regards.

Unfortunatley you cant have anything hanging over the balcony due to health and safety. But Im sure our Rosa can fill you in on what you can and cant do:gnthb: At the end of the day she is our long standing balcony queen who knows whats what. She has all the where for all and experience to put you in the right direction Blind  02

For sure indeed. I wouldn't hang anything over the balcony anyways - way too dangerous!

Next thing I see is front page headline, "POT FALLS FROM 13TH FLOOR - UNLUCKY FOR SOME!"

hi blind ive just been on my balcony and the top part i knocked it and it sounds hollow so i guess mine is a wood piece that went at top, i have them trellis pieces that normally go in a border and i turned it up side down and put 4 of them along top, here are pics to show you.
I have a light, mobiles hanging and they are very safe as long as you tie them up with garden wire they will be secure and wont fly off your balcony, mind my lights are not on the outside they run along the top inside of my balcony, i also have 3 hanging baskets very secure so theres no chance of them flying off my balcony, my 2 hanging baskets at each side they are held up by the chain and i tie them with garden string to make them secure and i have string holding the sides so they dont move around much.

    heres the pics i took.
