I was listening this morning to a song by Peter, Paul and Mary - a song of theirs came up on another thread.

Here is one of their famous, gentle, ballads - Lemon Tree.

In a couple of week's time it's the fifth anniversary of Mary's sad death from leukemia.
This is a tribute video to her and she's singing a lullaby to her grand-daughter - written by John Denver.

Mary recorded a very nice version of 'I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To be Free' - first recorded by Nina Simone in 1967 - but I don't seem able to find it on line. Any film buffs would know the tune because it was the title tune for the TV series 'Film...'.

It was written, in 1963, by the jazz legend Billy Taylor and this is him playing it.

Here are two different versions of the 1934 Cole Porter song "Miss Otis Regrets".

There's an interesting story of how the song was written but, unfortunately, I don't have time to explain at the moment. If you're interested, please ask.

This is by Nat King Cole

And this is by Kirsty McColl and the Ist Battalion of the Irish Guards

Three people have asked about how the song 'Miss Otis Regrets' came to happen.

What is supposed to have happened is that Cole Porter was having lunch in a posh restaurant with friends and said he can write a song about anything. So someone challenged him to write a song about the next thing that they heard (not at their table).

Just then, a waiter came over to the next table and said to the waiting guests there 'Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today'.

Yes, he has a remarkable voice; am I alone in thinking that his face doesn't suit his voice though? You know what I mean, when you hear someone and take a shine to their voice, you immediately build a mental image of them, and then when you see them they couldn't be further removed from your mental image?
