    A few things can be used to tell a dogs age.

    Teeth is the primary one, size, type (puppy or adult), wear and condition of tooth.

    Also in nearly all breeds, the roof of the mouth can be paler in younger dogs, beginning to turn black around 18 months / 2 years.

    Additionally, the bones in the forelegs are usually overlapped, and slowly move apart to their correct place over time... these are called growth plates. These soft bone growth plates can be felt and often seen too as you look at the dog from the front.

    Then there's greying of the muzzle which can start around 4 but this is a very inaccurate method of guessing as the age it starts can vary greatly, if they go grey at all and some even a grey in the muzzle from the day they are born because of their natural colouring.
