Groups of young males of any stripe can be a bit intimidating. True, I wouldn't attempt smiling at them.

I agree, there's good ones and bad ones. Just like Brits, eh? But mainly neutral to good, I'd say.

Yep I agree, I work with an Indian friend who speaks clear standard English and still some clients will try to answer his questions to me!
It is hurtful for him, when all he is doing is his job and trying to help them.

I also do agree with Madahhlia a smile in the right place gets you far!

Maybe we could provide a free bus service from Calais to Scotland.

No reason why not - the French allow free passage from the Italian and Spanish borders to Calais!!!

Some probably do, although a) I made sure I could read, write and speak French before I came b) I didn't arrive here expecting the French state to house me, keep me or pay for my healthcare c) Despite living dangerously close to Dordogneshire, I avoid the ex-pat cliques like the plague, and don't impose my requirements for a place of worship to suit my religion, or British shops, or paperwork to be duplicated in English.

Now, now, no need for sarcasm:nonofinger::) My main point of disagreement was with the contention that the UK is civilised. Certainly where I lived, you'd need a pretty loose interpretation of the word to describe the state of the town and it's inhabitants. As @Val.. pointed out, not everyone has the opportunity to leave. And I was increasingly feeling that I was not allowed to think/feel how I wanted, let alone say anything! That's not freedom.

Immigrants are breeding faster than our indigenous population, and thus dilute it.

I have a huge problem with our education system. Turfing the kids out at 3pm means one parent can't hold down a regular job, it has to be a flex-hours one. Also parents have to then provide extra curricular activities for kids - they are likely to choose ones that they are familiar with "I played footie, so lets go to the kids footie session", so might not find what suits Little Johnnie best. Sure there are extra curricular activities available at school, but being voluntary they are not well taken up.

I think kids should be kept at school until, say, 6pm (from age 7-ish) and activities provided. This would be by a second shift of "teachers" - could be Forces personnel or some other strata of society. Provide opportunities for Music, Art, Drama, PE/Sport and vocational activities. Turning school leavers into proficient chefs (as in amateur, not professional!) would also be no bad thing in improving the nation's diet.

My kids are in private education, their school day finishes at 9pm, 6 days a week - provided they don't have music or drama rehearsals, which often go on later than that. 30% of the year group will be in sporting teams and all the teams play competitive matches against other schools, generally once a week. Pupils not proficient in a Winter term's sport may well be in a team for a Summer term one, so most pupils will gain experience of Team and Competitive play.

I think that such additional education effort, in the public sector, would reduce the wayward behaviour of teens, reduce crime, give them additional interests in later life, and improve society generally (and I boldly assume that the saving downstream would pay for the extra cost upstream). Always amazed me the sort of wide knowledge that the Old Boys used to have, I wonder how much of that still exists in the up-coming generations?

Not taken as often as you might think, and somewhat frowned on by universities that my Daughter was applying to a couple of years back (not that she wanted to take one, but it was regarded as a potential negative to being offered a place)

I abhor multiculturalism. I have no difficulty with multi-racial, but I think that our culture is being diluted and no longer exists in its original form.

When we go to a Muslim country, on holiday, my wife and girls cover their heads with a scarf, I don't wear shorts etc. in public and we have respect for the local customs (although I do find it very hypocritical that they have enclaves where alcohol is served and Westerner's scanty dress etc. is tolerated).

By the same token I would like people who come here to respect, honour and adopt our way of life - or don't come.

                  Those are all good points.

Inevitably, economic migrants are going to want to be housed, fed and cured if that is on offer. I can't really blame them for being ruthless in whatever they need to do to improve life for themselves and their families - that is exactly what I would do if it was necessary. You could almost argue that people who successfully migrate are determined and resourceful, therefore self-selecting as having the most potential to contribute to our society. Think of the guts it takes to cling to the axle of a lorry to get across the channel - desperate measures.

However, twenty years down the line most immigrant families who stick around have lifted themselves well out of that dependency stage - but the home-grown dependants will probably never leave it but pass the habit down to their children and grandchildren. I think they are the bigger drain on our national resources.

So the harder we make it for them, the better quality of immigrant we get then? Some might then suggest getting loads of razor wire, savage dogs, goon towers, etc. to up the quality a bit more.
