I had a meeting with the head of the District Council yesterday. He definitely didn't want additional powers. His words went something like "At the moment we can blame the County Council for things or let them get on with some of the most awkward things. We have enough funding problems as it is." :heehee:

Well quite; it'd a headache most sane councils wouldn't want. Those going after these additional powers are possibly the ones that want them for their own pet projects and egos. Who said corruption?! Oh, just the voices in my head again eh...

I though Salmond was very ungracious in defeat, but from him I wouldn't expect him to be, pratt that he is.

I was pleased to see that David Cameron has announced that England and Wales will be getting extra powers as well, and at the same time as Scotland does (although Labour don't want that as they would be outvoted in England). Nigel Farage called on all the Scottish MPs to stop voting on issues which don't affect Scotland, which makes sense if they had any honour, but that word doesn't go hand in hand with politicians.

I'd be interested to see how much more decisive the vote would have been if Salmond and co hadn't tried to rig the vote by not allowing Scots living in the rest of the UK to vote and also how the 16/17 year olds voted.

I've been quite torn over this in all honesty. I think if Salmond wasn't, well, Salmond then i may well have thought differently. He's always seemed shifty to me

For the record I'm not a pure English Rose living in lovely Derbyshire, I'm part Scot and very proud of that :)

SEEMED?! Shifty and treacherous as they come that one. Lowering voting age to that where politics really doesn't feature and can be plied with empty promises, and not allowing Scots out of the area a vote??

Well at least we don't have to ban you now ;)

The fact that it appeared to be a gerrymandering tactic apart, votes-for-16 seems to be a coming-thing in the Western democracies ...

If the 'West Lothian question' gets sorted and Scottish, Welsh & NI MPs can't vote on matters that only affect England (or Wales & NI), and if there's greater devolution of powers to Scotland, Wales & NI so they can set their own taxes, welfare benefits, pensions, etc., etc., and with just English MPs voting on English matter, then there could very well be the interesting situation of a UK Government in power that will have very little left to do, apart from starting wars.

Voters in Alex Salmond's own constituency voted resoundingly NO.

Surely his position is now untenable although I doubt he'll resign. Let's hope he's voted out at the next election.
