When it comes to recommending anything to anyone I'm the last to do so, mainly because we all see different qualities in things and so recommendations can lead to disappointments However, I'll break a rule in this instance and recommend a Plant Nursery that I was taken to by friends when staying with them for a few days last week. It was a first visit for my friends too as they had heard of the Nursery from other friends. The Plant Nursery I'm recommending is Poet's Cottage at Lealholm, near Whitby, North Yorkshire in stunning countryside which is an added bonus. When we walked over to the Nursery from the car park all I saw was what I thought was a ordinary garden gate to what appeared to be a small garden...how wrong can you be?! On walking into the "garden" I suddenly realised that the garden went on and on and was filled with plants planted in the borders and large numbers of neatly lined pots. As you walk further on there are little paths leading you to different levels and into immaculately maintained stock areas of trees, shrubs and plants. I was amazed at the number of different varieties of plants that the Nursery had. Also because the borders and along the paths there were plants in them that showed you how the plants you might buy would look in your own borders and gardens it was a great help. When you walk along the paths you are able to take your time to stop and take a look more closer at a tree, shrub or plant that may have caught your eyes along the borders. Plus the plants have signs to tell you when they were planted and you can gauge how they will fit into your garden. One of the reasons for my recommendation is the sheer quality and number of varieties of plants and that I paid nearly half the price for what I pay for plants of lesser quality at Nurseries in West Cheshire. You also are left alone to wander and browse through the garden and then when you're ready, Ilona and the staff are there to give you knowledgeable and friendly advice and perhaps recommend alternatives which might be the actually plant you wanted in the first place. So there, I'm sticking my neck out which a recommendation, but I'm confident that anyone who can visit the Nursery will agree that this is a Jewel of a Nursery. I know that the next time I stay with my friends we will definitely go back to visit [and buy] some more plants.
brill glad you had a good time x but why have you scored though a lot of the text? i found that part hard to read x
Sounds idyllic. I used to visit a similar Garden Centre at Tavernspite just outside Whitland between Carmarthen and Tenby. Almost every plant for sale in their shop area was also planted up in their lovely gardens which you could wander around at will. Your post has reminded me about it, must try to get there and see if it's still the same. Thank you Armandii.
http://www.poetscottage.co.uk/index.htm Looks good. A bit far for me to go though. It might be of interest to relatives living in Yorkshire.
Hi Maria, I didn't intentionally score through the text of my post but sometimes this system will, for some unknown reason, do so when you're writing a thread but doesn't show it is doing so when you're writing it. It was a late thread for last night and so I hadn't the energy to change it but I will try now although I might have to completely rewrite the post to overcome the system.
That's my neck of the woods. I might pop over and have a look some time. I've heard of Poet's Cottage, just never gave it any thought before.
I was in your town, Clueless, during the stay and had a cup of coffee and sarnie at the Cafe on the Promenade. Poet's Cottage is well worth the visit, plus there are two cafes and a Pub in the village
I visited that nursery back in 1982, think it might have undergone a few changes since then, stayed in a holiday cottage right next door to it.
Yep, JazzSi, in those days it was run by Hilda Rees who converted an old orchard into a garden which slowly developed into a very small Plant Nursery after starting out selling cuttings. About 12 years ago one of her former staff, Ilona, and her husband took over and developed it into the Jewel of a Nursery that it is now. Haven't been there since 1982 [32 years ago]??............why not go back for another holiday and see what I mean about the length, breadth of the varieties, and quality of the plants. As I said I pay nearly twice the price at Nurseries around Cheshire for plants of lesser quality.
I do so wish I was nearer Armandii. For you to recommend a Nursery - it must be good, If you go again, will you please take some photos? Jenny
I should be back next year, Jenny. I should have taken my camera with me as the scenery around there is stunning. I don't know about that, Sheal. It's fairly out in the "Sticks" and although they have a Web site showing their location they don't have a site for selling plants although they are, I believe, thinking about doing so. I think they do fairly well for several reasons, [a] the quality of stock, the extensive diversity of varieties, [c] the prices of the plants, [d] the very friendly welcome [e] the ability to see plants in situ in the borders by just wandering along without being hustled, [f] the very knowledgeable advice given when asked for without a sale being pushed on you. For me, it deserves a bigger footfall, which is good for the Nursery but also for visitors because they sell great plants at a great price. Driving on the roads around there in the Yorkshire Dales can be interesting too!!!
