I once asked for a trick and a little kid did an actual backflip...

...and on that basis, I like Halloween.

Way back when, I used to make tablet, treacle toffee, toffee, and toffee apples to give away but over the last decade or so it has changed significantly - - its no longer about kids knocking a door to do a wee party piece and leave with a wee poke of sweets; now, its a knock at a door in a hoodie, say "Trick or Treat" and expect cash.

Curtains and blinds drawn, batteries out of the doorbell for me.

Think I must have missed a trick then ... when did it alter that it meant money? And, more so: how do they communicate that?

        Trick or Treat
        Smell my feet
Or ... give me cash or your face I'll smash
Seriously, if they are demanding money under any kind of threat ... surely that is blackmail and takes it to a whole new level?

When we used to go trick or treating as children we'd usually get a handful of coppers instead of sweets, we were happy though. Imagine an eight year old with £6 to spare!!!

I never went 'trick or treating ' when I was a lolet but we did used to take it in turns to get dressed up as Guy fawkes and get pushed around in a wheel barrow doing 'Penny for the Guy'..

Ha! At least you got to take turns ... I wasn't given a choice (youngest/smallest/do as you're told) :heehee: Not that my mother agreed with it - she said it was "begging"; we said it was a bit of "fun".

The law decided that it was begging and now it's banned. :noidea:

I always thought you had to make him out of old tights and socks, plus whatever else you could stuff him with. Then you clothed him, and chucked him on a bonfire!
What you did sounds risky :heehee:

Back in the old days I remember King Charles II banning fireworks but he never banned the celebrations. :old: :heehee:

'Penny for the Guy' has not been banned but the local constabulary can ban it under the Vagrancy Act 1824. More recently it would have come under the ASBOS restrictions if they wanted to enforce it but that may be superseded by IPNAS (Injunctions to Prevent Nuisance and Annoyance).

Local banning has only been used a couple of times recently and that was to stop kids being a nuisance to shoppers on the High Street.

the kids just do not seem to trick or treat the way I did when I did as a kid. You can barely hear them yell out TRICK OR TREAT, they are so soft spoken, or barely say anything, some just stand there. Then I say, well what do you want? they look at me like I am suppose to know.
LOL. Then I usually say well good luck at the dentist. Parents love me.
