oh guys this gardening lark is giving me a headache lol i am changing my mind as much as the weather!!! ive decided i am not going to plant in the clay bed but instead plant(maybe lol) in an area i cleared at the bottom of the garden its 25 feet by 10 foot :) thought maybe it could look like a meadow/country garden if i put bulbs in then directly sowed annuals to grow after the bulbs had died back.would that work? there are some tree roots in that area though soooooooooooo? thoughts please xxxx much appreciated x also just how many bulbs do you think i may need for that area?

A bit of extra info. I read on the interweb that tulips will not reliably re flower in the UK. Something to do with the UK winters not being cold enough. You may well end up with a load of green leaves and no flower. I haven't had the chance to test this out yet.:)

Morrisons - 50 tulips for £3 - they've still got them in stock. Along with daff's and crocus bulbs. I planted a load of daff's and tulips last year - the idea being daff's flower first, die back, and then the tulips take over. I put some piccies of the tulips on the gallery section. Pot grown tulips do very well and you can move them around - I've got clay soil as well :dbgrtmb:

More daffs and tulips ,. plus look at the name and see when they flower as you can extend the season by choosing the varieties,

Maria , this page from T and M gives pretty good info on bulb spacing and depths . You dont have to be as precise as it shows though . For Tulips and daffs I plant them at the full depth off my bulb planter about 125mm 5" , and space them the length off the blade on my trowel or bulb planter about 125mm or 5 " again :dbgrtmb: Seems to work fine ! Other bulbs will be different depths , just read the instructions on the pack .

I plant daffs in small groups 5 or 7 and always odd numbers never even , another 30 at least , have you tried ornamental onions this one is really good and not that expensive and one of the ones I grow great late colour

with tulips you can leave till December to buy and plant out plus the garden centers normally have them at half price or less I do the same with the ornamental onions as they want the space for all the xmas stuff , but you leave it to chance if they have any left. But saying that its a cheaper way of filling up the borders.
