We bought our last small deep fat fryer from Lakeland when on special offer for £20, and as they give a lifetime guarantee, when it fails we'll take it back and get our £20 back.

As for 'teaspoons of oil' using oil in a cheap sprayer really cuts down oil usage in a frying pan.

I really like tefal, I have their pressure cooker but the Actifry is another "teaspoon of oil fryer" I want one where the chips etc go in a basket and are submerged into the oil!!:)

We had a deep fat fryer years ago @ Val as I thought it would be nice to have fresh cooked chips in hot oil.:snork:

Worst bit of kit we ever bought. The kitchen stunk of chip oil after a few weeks of use,the oil was a pain to change and after a few months the basket would get clogged up with oil so wouldn't go up and down properly:yikes:

Our salvation came when Mr Kandy developed High Colesterol, out went the deep fat fryer and in came oven chips:snork:

I have recently bought a Breville halo wave, teaspoon of oil jobby, I find it`s better without the paddle as it breaks the chips up, but they don`t taste as good as deep fried.

Val, I speak as a Scotsman - now bear in mind that chips are pretty much the staple diet where I come from, so we know a thing or two about chips . Like you, I was unconvinced about the teaspoon of oil fryers, but hated oven chips and our deep fryer was a real pain to be honest - 3L of oil to fill each time, a pain in the neck to clean (ours was the sort where you lift the element out of the bucket of oil, so easier than some to clean, but still a pain), and when used the house stank of cooking fat.

That, coupled with my wee scare last year ('Scottish' cholesterol according to the doctor :snork:), and a deep fryer was a non starter (best of it is, it had been relegated to the back of a cupboard for over a year anyway), so we decided to buy an Actifry.

In all seriousness, it is the best bit of kit we have bought in a long, long time. Ours is the 2-in-1 which has two tiers, so you can do chips in the bottom and then add the top tray with fish/steak/meat etc and cook everything in one machine. Batter on fish etc comes out crispy, chips are as near to proper chips as you could reasonably ask (especially if you use groundnut oil or beef dripping), and it cooks minted lamb chops better than anything else. Cleaning is dead easy too - pop the lot in the dishwasher if you have one, or if not a bowl of soapy water will have it looking like new in seconds.

Not cheap, granted - but highly, highly recommended.

Sauce pan, fill with oil, chuck chips in, done. Store in the cupboard under the sink.

            Stay classy.

I must admit I hate oven chips, worst thing ever invented.

But I do use frozen chips in a deep fryer.
Not a problem as I only use it for chips, change the oil about every three months whether it needs it or not.

I love chips, we used to have a Tefal deep fat fryer and very good it was too. It had a filter so no nasty pongs. When oven chips came along Mrs JWK switched to them as they are easier, but I don't like them that much. Give me proper deep fat fried chips any day you can't beat them.

The oven chips we have once a week are either,Mc Cains Roasted Garlic Wedges,or Mc Cains Rustic Chips or Aunt Bessie's Homestyle Chips. We only have them once a week with our fish on a Friday.Tried the 5% oven chips when they first came out but gave up with them as they tasted a bit like cardboard:snork:

Have heard of the Actifry but have never tasted chips made in one or seen how they work so haven't bought one as yet:biggrin:

I want to try this recipe for 'perfect' crispy chips. It's a 4 part process of soaking, par-boiling, then freezing and finally frying!! The chips at the end DO look yummy though.
