It's just a red herring (no, we didn't cross breed with fish!) as it was always thought that there was a little bit of cross breeding between Cro-magnon and Neandethal (Cro Mags and Nandys, for short).

They don't use the term Cro-Magnon any more but have changed it to EMH (Early Modern Human). EMH were intelligent and looked similar to modern man and Nandys were not very intelligent and looked more towards our idea of the cross over from ape to man (although they were a different species).

The physical difference, although Nandys were probably thought to be extremely ugly, weren't quite sufficient for it to preclude an issue from them having had it off (technical term :heehee:) together.

      So it's old news. :)

There was a telly programme about this a while back, do you recognise him?

Have you been watching the 'Human Universe' documentary series with Prof Bri Cox? He puts a different spin on things. He was showing us some prehistoric cave art which has long been believed to be 40,000 years old, and created by early modern humans. But he said recent improvements in the accuracy of dating stuff now suggested the art was 43,000 years old. He pointed out that although 3000 years doesn't sound like much in the grand scheme of things, it would mean the art was created before modern humans arrived at that location, and while neandertals were still the dominant species there.

I've seen other documentaries that seem to disprove the idea that neandertals were not as skilled at making tools, and that they did not form social groups like modern humans. The latest version of the story (as far as I can keep up) seems to be not that they were less intelligent or less social, but that they were lagging well behind on the language front, so couldn't organise themselves as efficiently as modern humans, and therefore were at a tactical disadvantage when they had to clash.

          That's interesting. :blue thumb:

I've never had a chance to watch Brian Cox. Too busy.

I would guess that Homo Sapiens hunted the Nandys into extinction.

"Look what I've caught for lunch, CaveMabel!" "Oh, no, not more Nandy again."
