I've got a hedge which runs along the side of the garden, and our runner beans are about 1 ft in fromt the edge. We also have potatoes further up, about 2 ft in.

The problem is that under the hedge all kinds of weeds are coming up, absolute nightmare to keep on top of. Every time I strim them they come back even bushier! If I buy some weed killer and zap the weeds will it affect my beans and potaotes? Obviously I will be careful of spray in the wind, but I'm just wondering about the potatoes, as we will be digging them soon.

Many thanks for your help in advance! (fingers crossed)

Well, I'd definitely avoid Sodium Chlorate. Look for the ones that say that they are de-activated on contact with the soil. I think that Round-up says that. But please check the "small writing" on the back of the pack:). Maybe "pathclear" or "resolver" but once again, check the small writing on the back:)

Pathclear is definately a No No as it has residual action. Roundup will be fine.

Personally after they have died off I would multch heavily to combat future weed growth.

Roundup / Glyphosate / Resolva all fine. Steer clear of residual week killers like Sodium Chlorate / Pathclear.

Holding a sheet of, say, cardboard in one hand will help you shield plants from any spray drift. Make sure you mark the side that faces the spray, so you don't accidentally turn it round any possibly brush some chemical off onto the plants. Or have someone help you - cardboard both sides of the area you want to spray, as is sounds that space is tight between the hedge and the veg, may prevent any accidents.

Don't spray anything you want to keep (obvious really, but worth having in mind when doing the job).

I would wait till the spuds are up, they are sensitive to weedkillers - on the other hand farmers quite often spray off potato tops to kill the haulms/top (green growth above ground) as it helps to harden off the tubers - this is done for maincrop spuds only, they use a contact weedkiller (not Roundup). I'm not advocating you doing this, just that if you did accidentallly spray them it would not be the end of the spuds underground.

Hmm... So a spray of round up closely done and shielding the veg sounds like the best option.

I'll attempt that approach and be really careful. I'll dig up the spuds along the hedge line to make the gap a little bigger before i spray.

Thank you for all your help.
