All you can do is give it a go, I would think so unless the nuts have been 'treated' to prolong storage life. Cheers, Tony.

Are the 'Hazelnuts' sold in shops Cobnuts?

I might try planting some of ours myself this year (the local mice normally do it for me), and I'll put in some extra ones @Jiffy how many seedlings are you after?

Haven't seen one squirrel since I moved here - - .. so I'm optimistic my contorted hazel has found a more suitable home for me to have some nuts.

I did ask some time back about hazel cuttings/rooting and the consensus seemed to be that they were not particularly successful (people using them as pea sticks - so, never "took"). I think your layered one's will prove more successful Jiffy.

But, to the contrary, this is what I've always understood
So aren't Cobnuts a cultivar of Hazelnuts (grown for commercial production)? So if you want to plant true wild Hazel hedging (as I did), you don't plant supermarket nuts?

The RHS are more concerned with cultivated varieties than wild ones.

          A quote from Asheridge trees

I'm a bit rusty on this, but I did put a bit of effort into getting the right (wild) ones some years ago.

I've just been looking at another site on the web and that states that supermarket hazelnuts are dried so probably not suitable for growing.

@Jiffy I may still have some hazelnuts left from my collecting earlier this autumn, I sowed dozens but if they're still OK I should have some spare and can pop some in the post if you pm me your address :)

Knowing horses as I do (we used to keep horses throughout my entire childhood, and family have almost always kept horses since, to present day), a male horse will bury its nuts at every opportunity, regardless of the time of year.
