Last year I bought and planted a white flowering hydrangea. This year it has flowered a deep purple. I was under the impression that white hydrangeas stayed white. Given a quick search around the internet, I'm assuming the colour has changed as I have alkaline soil. Can anyone confirm this to be the case?

    Thanks, Claire

Hi Claire, I have never known a white hydrangea to turn from white to purple, they can be changed from blues to pink and vice-versa,new blooms on mophead hydrangeas can appear to be white when first opening but usually change colour as they mature I wonder if the last years blooms never matured properly.

Thanks Walnut. When I bought the hydrangea last year I took photos of it and I had to double check back to make sure I wasn't imagining anything. But yes, I have full flowers in bloom in white. They were purchased like that and this is the first full year of being in my soil and budding and flowering. They really are a deep purple. I particularly don't like the purple ones so much and that's why I had gone for the white.

I too have never heard of a white hydrangea changing colours-perhaps a pic may be helpful to identify it-one from when it was white ( if it is a digtal pic of course) and one now.

Ivory, who is very very good on iding hydrangeas ( and a lovely person too) is away at the moment and will be for a while but I am looking after some of her hydrangea books so I can try.
