We use the self service tills at Sainsbury's, but only if we are buying a small amount or are not buying booze (seldom!). It sort of defeats the purpose of speed if you then have to wait for authorisation of being over 18. Necessary, but a nuisance.

Plus I like the banter I have with the "bright, young things" on the checkouts.

Totally agree Bob these chain stores if 'allowed' to get away with situations like this are putting profits before jobs so not good with today climate, not forgetting of course they are taking away the consumer's shopping 'experience' as I love DIY shopping yet hate with a passion food shopping!

Service with a smile that's what I say and if the person (at the check-out) is too grumpy for the work then let some other willing soul take their place but please lord not a computer! Hel.xxx.

My local B&Q has them and I like them, its much quicker than standing in a queue for the normal checkout. At the 'normal' checkout the B&Q staff never seem to have much of a clue how to scan anyway and you always seem to have to help them find the bar code, so why not just do the whole thing yourself, it seems a good idea to me. Ours has a B&Q helper present all the time and they quickly help if you've got problems. Its the same in our local Tesco, trouble is they have got very popular and the queues at Tesco for the self service are just as long as the normal checkout.

I first came across self service checkouts in France, but the other day I was at our local IKEA ( notorious for queues Europewide I think) and to my horror they had replaced 4 checkouts with self service - of course two members of staff were assisting bewildered shoppers in their use... adding to the melee!
If they are doing that in here in Germany I expect it´s going to be trend elsewhere.
