New Years Eve

Turbot!!! That reminds me of the news item.

From a news item 7/11/02 of a fish that survived against all the odds.

Herbert the Turbot

Herbert the Turbot you hero of fish,
you had no desire to become a cooked dish.
You challenged the gods and against all the odds,
succeeded in achieving your wish.

“Aha,” said our Herbert, “I’m going to dine.
I spy my dinner!” and leapt for the line,
could not wriggle free, was swept from the sea,
“Not bad,” said his captor, “you’re mine.”

Now Herbert tried hard to escape from this scene,
but soon was wrapped fast in bright, blue polythene,
put in the car’s boot with the rest of the loot,
and driven through countryside green.

“Stay calm,” said our Herbert, “and try to breathe slow,
for panic’s the worst of the things that I know.
The warm damp about is letting steam out.
I’ll be damned if I’ll choke now and go.”

He felt himself lifted and carried away.
“No use,” said a voice, “the food’s cooked today!”
A door opened wide. They thrust him inside
a fridge for a very long stay.

He shivered and shook. The warmth turned to drips
of icy cold water. “Now I’ve had my chips,”
Our poor hero said. “No, I am not dead!”
And sucked in some air with his lips.

The night passed so slowly but Herbert derived
some pleasure, for when his base captor arrived
he’d stayed at his station in cold animation.
“This fish,” called the man, “has survived!”

“How he has done it has sure got me beat!
One thing’s for certain, this fish we can’t eat.
They put him in water where our hero oughter
be after this fabulous feat.

Now this marine creature swims round wild and free
in an aquarium near to the sea.
The fish of all fishes on no human dishes –
Herbert the Turbot – yippee!
