On Saturday we had friends round (no, they're not weird!) and were in the kitchen chatting. I have very sensitive hearing and was sure I could hear people talking somewhere in the house. So I went out of the kitchen, one of my friends came with me, and I could hear the voices in the lounge.

We went in there and the voices were coming from the TV :yikes:. We hadn't turned it on that morning and if we had left it on overnight it would have turned itself off (turns off automatically after four hours).

There was no picture on the screen and the light that would show it was on was not lit. That light is quite a bright white light that illuminates the name of the manufacturer. A few seconds after we walked into the room there was a click from the TV (or its vicinity) and the sound stopped.

We weren't sufficiently sharp to register what was being said but there were a number of voices and it sounded like a discussion.

    Any ideas?

It used to happen to my sound system when it was switched off too, I lived right next to Surrey police hq and the cars used to stop at the give way line outside the house.

If they used the radio then police messages used to bleed into the speakers, used to scare the bejasus out of me :yikes:

I don't think it was any of those. They would sound like conversations between individuals whereas what we heard was more like the talking you get when it's a comedy panel show with a lot of them chatting at the same time.

My friend suggested it might be from something on the internet as the TV is connected - but we thought it unlikely as the TV was definitely switched off.

Do you have Sky by any chance?

Sometimes, with cable boxes or freeview boxes, it is possible for the audio signal from the box to short to the output of the audio amp in the TV (usually doing so via the common connection or crosstalk/induction); this signal in itself is not sufficient to drive speakers, however even when your TV is switched off there will be certain parts of the chassis energised (I would expect at least a +5v rail somewhere, if only to power the IR reciever) - its not beyond the realms that there could be some voltage leakage that would give just enough power to tickle the amplifier enough to produce a bit of sound.

A likely solution would be a higher quality SCART lead (or HDMI if that is your chosen weapon)

Hi FC, I don't understand most of what you said but can give you some info.

No, I don't have Sky, no satellite, no cable.

The TV is a Smart TV with built in Freeview. Apart from that I don't have anything. Although it has WiFi it doesn't work because of the distance from my router and the thick walls in between. so the TV is connected to the router through a socket in the wall power socket (can't remember what it's called).

Shiney, did you think to feel the television to see if it was warm?

Sorry, no! We had been in the room for a couple of hours up until then and the TV was off.

Maybe a TP-LINK ? I use one too in 'Geezer towers'.
Quite often my Sky banner appears on the TV screen and has a mind of its own. It will then disappear. I never lose the channel though. The first time it happened, I thought I had sat on the remote!

Have you been a good boy this year @shiney? Santa is up to date with technology you know. He uses the TV as a portal to spy on you to see if you've been naughty or good. That chatter you heard will have been the elves arguing about why they couldn't hear you (because the TV was off), but of course as soon as you went into the room, they heard you and promptly shut up. It happens all the time.

I am not so sure about this. I have just tried putting my ipod on voice record near the TV, whilst I went upstairs and had a bath. All it picked up was the letterbox banging, and next door arguing .
Maybe the elves just aren't Apple fans. :noidea:

I think you'll find that while it was your letter box banging, it wasn't the neighbours arguing. That will have been the elves fighting outside your door, fighting and arguing over whose turn it was to spy through your letter box.
