I received a 'black' mug from my son as a Xmas tree present and he told me to make a hot drink in it, does anyone know the coating used to make this happen? he even got a couple of my photos put on it (via Mrs S) I am intrigued.

So its a thermal coating and the picture only appears when it is hot ?
That is bloomin clever ! My best guess is its magic

They use thermochromic ink. Similar to the coloured flat thermometers. So when the temperature changes the colour changes. In the case of the mug I would think that they put the picture onto the cup (nice picture) and then cover it with a black coating that goes transparent above a certain temperature.
I have seen fabrics dyed with this type of compound and they change colour with body temperature.

Thanks Nigel, I thought someone here would know.
The photo is of a Little Bee Eater (same as the Avatar) and the other side is a Lilac Breasted Roller from our '12 Safari.
