So last night I was preparing the dining room for the next stage of decorating when I thought I would just check this area of the floor that we had been smelling whiffs of gas from for the past 4 years with a metre I had borrowed from work. Found that we did indeed have a leak and so had to call in national grid to shut off our gas to the whole of the house, condemning all of our pipework under the floor. We had new pipe work installed outside the house for our boiler and am hoping they can run a new pipe off of that so I can get our gas cooker back.

So we have no heating, no hot water and no cooker at the moment. :frown:

Morning J/J I am sorry to hear of your misfortune my friend:smile:

the same thing happened to us last year,in the kitchen and we lost our parakeet ,I was worried because we had a concrete kitchen floor and I had visions of the gas company digging it all up,but they just ran a new gas pipe from outside and from the meter:smile:

And the weather is set to get orrible

You need to get a portable gas cooker and pick a room that you'm gonna keep warm in, don't forget the houseplants too, I put my cactus in the fridge when sub zero temps are forecast.

Aw no really? I have a slow cooker and a microwave I'm hoping will get me through the period. We had something similar when we first moved in, had no heating, hot water, cooker, fridge or washing machine. Had to survive 3 weeks off of takeaways and ready meals and beans on toast. Am hoping this won't be as bad, but we shall see.

it must be terrible so many days with :lolpt:beans on toast ! Just joking here. Of course it is no fun living without commodities, but that will bring out your resourceful inner self, which, I am sure, is very clever. I would personally rely a lot on candles and camping cooking devices. In any case, here are some suggestion to keep you warm, from a Japanese site:

Had a company round earlier who say they should be able to at least get our heating and hot water back by tomorrow evening. Still will be without a cooker though...

Jane unfortunatly this is the misfortune of peoples who own the house .... my friend had the same problem with the difference that his house belong to the council and they where send to the hotel all payed untill work was undertake , plus meal and discount on the house rent .

His story actually made me think a lot and when I done my house I though about this as well

this is my bathroom , got a normal shower connect to the main boiler

but in case the boiler will let me down I installed and electric back up in case of emergency
behind the mirror so no one will see

then for the heating system that idea it`s even better

I`ve installed few electric elements in the bathroom and bedroom , they are electric but they manage to give loads of heating to the room , payed £50 for both , the ideas it`s even better as in summer I can turn the towels rail on electrically and no more wet towels ....

then even create a plan in case of zombie attack , but that`s another tread ;)

Sorry to hear your news Jane. Isn't it typical, why do these things always happen in the coldest part of the winter.

Put the slow cooker in the bedroom (and don't let OH take a spoon upstairs).

I knew somebody who kept themselves warm in a car parked up in freezing deserts overnight with a biscuit tin burner sat on a concrete slab, fueled by rolled up sheets of newspapers + bits of cardboard, and with a chimney made of baked bean cans poked through a custom insert to fit in the car window opening.

Well yesterday afternoon we got our heating and hot water back up and running. Still have no cooker though but am coping with just my slow cooker, microwave and we went out and bought a double ring.

Was then told that it will cost £580 just to expand our gas pipe outside the house all the way around to accommodate the extra draw that the gas cooker will take.

Am seriously considering getting quotes from a sparky and get an electric cooker installed instead as that is a stupid amount of money.

                                Blimey!

For our new kitchen the gas fitter ran a pipe under the floorboards for about 20 feet. He also fitted our new gas hob - all in for £110 which I thought was a little expensive when he gave me the quote. But when I saw what he had to do I gave him a bit extra, he managed to crawl under the floorboards all the way, a gap of abut 18 inches at the most.
