Well alcohol is rather expensive here now, so people have a 'skin full' before they set out! called pre-loading.

Be interesting to see if the clubs bring the price of their drinks down when they're suddenly empty then.

"Red Bull and Vodka please barman."

"Certainly Sir, i'll get our mortgage advisor to help you fill the forms in."

Our pubs (Scotland) are suffering from both Pre Loading and the new drink drive limit of 50mg per 100ml
For redstar Pre Loading, They drink lots at home before going out
Reason A Pint can of beer at home is 80p A pint in a pub is £3.50

Our local is suffering, again from the new drink drive limit in Scotland, no one dare go out Sunday evening incase over the limit on Monday morning, the same with lunchtimes
the old limit you "could" have one pint of beer or one large glass of wine

Pre-loading, OK new term. Do you have restaurants that let you BYOB? Guess that does not help for clubs. But, what about an old fashioned flask. With a little secret manipulation you can sip and don't tell. Anyway, not good at your "money" signs. But I would say over here a good Bombay Gin Martini out at a club would run about $6.00 to $8.00. A nice glass of wine the same price. So not sure how that is comparable. And a lot of restaurants that offer the BYOB also charge a "de-corking fee" usually it is about $5.00. It is hit or miss that you save money with a BYOB (de-corking fee) or not. There is a few places, that do not charge de-corking fees.

Ahh yes, one more brief piece of info. As I can cross state lines here in USA with out issue. There are some states that do not put a tax on wine, beer, etc. Some folks will go to that state to "load up" their car to take back to the state that does charge tax on such items, that is called "Boot Leggin". The state I live in does charge tax, two of the states that do not are both ruffly 30 min to an hour drive from me to get to a "beverage " store. Have I done it , sure, but usually I am passing through, and it is only one or two bottles. Where the crime get charged is with restaurants or clubs they cannot get any wine from other states that is not "blessed" and not "taxed". If caught they can be fined big time.

Oh, gosh another piece. Some states will sell wine and beer in their food stores. Some will not.

I think this is just to target the new young generation that will get drunk at home, then going out and don`t spend a penny all night ....... I do understand that with £20 you can buy 20 cans of beers , but unfortunatly pubs and clubs have bills to pay ..... i didn`t know myself that many pubs open till late are now charging an entrance fee

In my younger days I'd visit the Speakeasy Club in London, mainly free by being on the 'guest list' of bands playing there (plus some scams). The bar prices used to be doubled at midnight, but as a home brewer I had a plentiful supply of snap on plastic caps to re-seal bottles bought at 10 - 15 mins before midnight and make them last another 2 - 3 hours. The likes of Billy Connolly and David Bowie could go back to the bar and pay double whack, but not me.

                snap on caps.jpg

I still use them, but nowadays for re-sealing pressed apple pasteurised in one pint bottles after only drinking part of a bottle.
