I've searched the web trying to identify this plant, and I think it may be Laurel:cnfs:
It was raining when I took these pics, but the plant has very glossy leaves......someone even asked me if I'd put something on them to make them shine! I chopped the thing down to ground level a year ago when we moved here, 'cos it was in a very overgrown area, and knowing nothing about gardening was trying to clear the area. It's grown back so well, I'd like to find out how to care for it properly. Many thanks.

Hi there. It could be a Camellia, if you chopped it back you probably cut the flower buds off. On the other hand it might not be...

And in all honesty-it looks like you have done it a world of good, healthy, green, strong growth.

Is the new growth not a bit too strong for a camellia?

Thank you all for your replies......I am sooo chuffed if it is camelia:)
Lollipop.....it has grown back healthy and strong, so I unwittingly did some good by chopping it right back, by the look of things.
I did'nt see any flowers on it last year, but it was in August we moved here.....am I right in thinking it would have flowered in the spring? Just had another look at it and I can't see any evidence of buds.....but maybe next year?
I'm off now to do some reading up on camelias so that I can tend it properly :)
    Many thanks all!
