We have just bought a new rotavator for the plot, we already have a lightweight cultivator that will break soil down that has been turned over, but that would take quite a bit of time to do, so we bought this new/old one.

This is a Wolseley Merry Tiller, the model is a "Major" and when new it had the optional adjustable handlebars fitted, approx. year is 1968. At some point in it's life it's 3hp engine was replaced with a more powerful 5hp model. This machine will rotavate uncultivated ground easily. I also have a set of finger rotors (not pictured) that cultivate the ground further to a fine tilth. Although it's over 40 years old, it still starts with one pull.

I normally dig the plot by hand in spring, then run over it with the cultivator we already have, that is fine but very time consuming, this new toy will save that time.

    Steve...:)

My Dad had one of those Merry Tillers, it was a good machine from what I remember.

My 3.6hp Honda goes through uncultivated ground, even when my clay soil has a baked crust on top, so 5hp sounds pretty good.

Does it have reverse gear? I find that essential as I can't turn when I'm close to rabbit fencing even with my handlebars at 45 degrees.

No reverse on mine, think that is only on the Titan model. Is yours a Merry Tiller too?

The start on first pull sounds good to me! I dearly love my 5hp rotovator but it's a pain having to get the OH to start it each time. It rebounded once too often, nearly took my arm off and I'm afeared of it now:sad: Saving up for an electric start one.......

I have one, but watch out the big drive wheel will spin some soil at you and can hurt if hits you in the face, there're a good machine but old :dbgrtmb:

Honda F360. Plot holders were changing to Hondas from Merry Tillers about 25 years ago.

So wish I could find a decent second hand petrol one :sick0026:

I'm seriously running out of time to get my allotment dug, did think about hiring a rotavator for a day but £80 for one days use is a tad bit excessive me thinks...

Looks like a real monster Steve. You could plough up motorways with that thing :)
