My last garden activity was Friday - I lifted all the tubers that I didn't get time to do at the start of the winter - the dahlias have done well, I got quite a few of the standard size ones, and I 'think' these ones must be the XXXL ones I got from T&M last year

The remaining stems on these are like tree branches! I presume that its best to trim these back before replanting?

I also got a surprise further round the garden; in one of my big barrel planters I had what I thought was a weed doing remarkably well over the winter - turns out, it is celery!

                  2015-02-18 12.12.48.jpg

I sowed some celery and celeriac last year, but was too late in moving the seedlings on, so they pretty much got abandoned in this barrel. Lo and behold, they have done remarkably well.

I don't suppose they will be edible, not least as they haven't been blanched at all, but I am hoping that this bodes well for this coming years crop?

Cold wind outside this afternoon, so did some pottering about in the greenhouse.

Emptied out the three large pots of mint which sit by the back door, refilled them and replanted each one with a few pieces of root. Evicted a few sneaky slugs which were overwintering among the crocks in the bottom of the pots.

Sowed some mixed spicy leaves and rocket to provide some early salad leaves.

Had a rummage around the base of the purple sage growing behind the greenhouse and found three branches which had layered themselves, so cut them off and potted them up to provide some new plants.

Went into the garden, had a look and then went back in the house for a nice cup of tea. The icy, sleety showers sort of put me off:rolleyespink: At least I had a look!

Had a brief moment of sunshine - which I could see wouldn't last more than about 10 minutes.
Long enough to get the pruners to my Linaria Purpurea and Linaria Canon Went. Cut away all the long tall straggly last year's growth and smiled at the fresh new shoots springing from the base. They have coped with Winter very well,
