We have some (4) Lettuce plants ("cut and come again" varieties) growing in a container at home and we just cut leaves off when required.

On one of them, the stem seems to have just rotted about an inch above the soil. The other two are fine. Could it be down to slugs / snails nibbling at it, thus exposing it to the elements which caused it to rot, or could it be more sinister? Unfortunately Mrs Doogle pulled it up before I could take a photo but the roots were fine.

It was probably slug damage, with this mild wet weather slugs/snails are rampant at the moment. Put down pellets or slug traps to minimise the damage.

According to Monty Don, aphids are quite fond of lettuce plants, could be due to them but i think they leave a white powdery residue behind them.
