I was disappointed with Moonlight and Firestorm last year (first time growing) but even my good old reliable favourite Polestar didn't do very well either. Best performer was White Lady, and my Jescot-Long-Uns produced a heavy crop.

The problem I had last year was that after heavy rain all winter and spring my plot was waterlogged until about June. Lots of first plantings sat in holes full of water and drowned, and it wasn't just runner beans affected, but everything that needed planting in April - May.

I'm doing painted lady this year. I always grow too many and end up freezing/giving away. Superb plant. I'm growing on an arch for the first time so any pointers would be gratefully received

Scarlet Emperor for me, and in climbing French beans Bridgwater and Blue Lake - I might give Cherokee Trail of Tears another go, but I don't seem to get such a good crop from this variety, a lovely tasty bean though.

I've gradually reduced down from a dozen varieties to just one. Polestar is the favourite flavour and texture for my customers. I'll be growing approx. 200 plants this year. Plus a couple of varieties of French bean.

Polestar did OK for me last year after a slightly slower start than normal.
