Purple Sprouting Broccoli (too soon)

I purchase some tiny Purple Sprouting Broccoli plants in April and planted them expecting a crop next spring.

The plants have grown really well and are tall and bushy in my newly begun raised bed. The problem is the plants are starting to produce central flowering heads already :cnfs: with some very tiny side flowers . What do I do with these, take them off? What happens then , will I still get a crop in spring.

Are you sure they are Spring flowering, rather than Summer flowering?

I've got some Summer Flowering that I sowed 05March and planted out 04May that has little flowers/florettes forming.

At least I think its my Summer Flouring rather than my Spring Flowering ... perhaps I'd better go and check!

Your plants will run out of steam by the winter but enjoy it anyway. The new varieties can be harvested through the summer and winter but as you know sprouting broccoli is most useful in late winter/early spring when there is not much else available to eat in the garden. If you want sprouting broccoli next winter and spring you can put some plants in now for cropping then.

Hi Kristen I am new to veg gardening and haven't a clue whether the plants are spring or summer flowering, in fact I though there was only spring flowering :o I am learning fast.

Johnny I will go ahead and eat any flowers which appear then (ate one this evening and it was fantastic) and forget about spring!
