Well you are going the right way to encourage them into the garden. We used to pick them up and hold them, they usually have a lot of fleas on them, don't know why, and boy they sure can move fast if they want to.

I think that is what puts people off them is the flea and tick thing.

Hopefully tho if i do encourage some to come and live in my garden the fact my cats have flea and tick treatment monthly it might help reduce the population of fleas on hedgehogs if they the fleas bite my cats and die. Probably doesn't work like that at all but i'm going to pretend it does

@Dips Just found this which is interesting, I didn't know this. :)

Hedgehog fleas only live on hedgehogs. They like the cool open environment of the coarse and widely spaced spines where it can run fast. If it finds itself in the dense, warm coat of a dog or cat, it immediately knows it's in the wrong place and drops off to wait for another hedgehog

        Found this as well. :wub2:

HOW GOOD ARE HEDGEHOGS AT CONTROLLING GARDEN PESTS?The short answer is, excellent.
They are without doubt the best friend a gardener can have.
One hedgehog has been known to eat 63 caterpillars, 22 earwigs, 75 beetles, along with numerous slugs, snails, millipedes and larvae in one sitting. And don't forget, the hedgehog usually returns to eat at least twice a night!
You can see why he is such a handy little animal to have around. He will also tidy up the garden for you by disposing of any dead carcass lying around such as rats or mice etc.

this is true but hedgehog fleas will bite you and hang out on dogs and cats for a while, we were eaten alive by fleas one year, we kept finding them on the dogs...and on ourselves! the penny dropped that they had to be coming from Hodgie our resident hedgehog so we got a flea powder for him and also put some in his nest...as if by magic fleas were gone! :phew:
