Suddenly chunks of some of the apple tree have started to die off.

There's no sign of any wee beasties or fungus.

It seems to affect some spurs, but neighbouring ones seem Ok.

Not all trees are affected, and those which are look otherwise fine.

    Any Ideas?

Looks like blossom wilt to me. If you are a member of the RHS send a bit to Wisley and they will tell you. If it is, you just have to prune out the infected bits when you see them and burn them. Disinfect your secateurs with Dettol between cuts.

    Good luck

Sorry I missed your original post.

Those dead shoots will certainly have to be pruned out and by the look of it, the tree would benefit from a good general prune as well. Years ago, I bought a house with a much-neglected apple tree in the garden so I got myself the RHS book about growing fruit. This contained specific advice on how to rehabilitate neglected fruit trees which proved very successful over the ensuing years.
