    We were there in February.

I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask about a female feeling safe. I'll ask Mrs Shiney what she thinks.

We were with a tour group and stayed at good hotels - an extremely cheap and enjoyable holiday. Food was excellent, people friendly, accommodation excellent.

I am cheerful after having seen the number of wee seedlings that have decided to show themselves in the past couple of days in the greenhouse - I just hope they all grow big enough in time for planting out..

Had quite an unusual experience in Pret A Manger today. I don't know whether it was because (perhaps) it showed that I had been crying earlier (lost my PO card and went to pieces over it - perhaps due to mum being so close to death now). I placed a granola bar on the counter and asked for a tea.

To my astonishment, the member of staff on the till said there was no charge, i.e. that it was FREE!!! I was somewhat taken aback and asked why - he said it was my lucky day! I was pleased but unsure what to make of it. Was it legal? Was it his last day there? Part of an ongoing random act of kindness? Ever happened to anyone here?

you probably pay the tea 3 times over when you buy something else - knowing their prices.

It's a very good company policy. The company encourages the staff to hand out the occasional free tea or coffee to regular customers.

This has many good side effects. The customer feels good, the staff feel good because they are able to give the customer something and they feel the pleasant result of it, it allows the staff to feel that they're not just a number but actually have some freedom of choice in who to give it to.

Apparently (I've never been into one of their shops), this attitude, with other friendly policies, has had a very good effect on staff morale and the subsequent increase in turnover.

Ha...is this suggesting he took company policy a tad too far?

This is a hard guess...I mean, there can be many reason for this free granola. But just to double check I would go there the following week at the same time...

Not sure they operate like that, i.e. free stuff at a certain time. Well, I have no need to delve deeply into it really. Who knows what would occur if I chased it up - he may have got sacked and I might have to pay for it! [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I don't think the company policy is too rigid so he may have been able to give a little extra.

          It's good PR, isn't it? :dbgrtmb: :)

Random act of kindness - he may have paid for you himself to cheer you up :)

Yes that occurred to me. Apparently staff can give out free drinks if you make a friendly impression on them..... Apart from not even knowing about this, I was far too forlorn/upset to do that so I guess I got the sympathy freebie!
