Hi telly. I had this problem as well. In the end I put in some 4"X4" posts and screwed gravel boards to them. That way you can cut the boards to the size you want:)

You could just cut a panel to the required width and nail two batterns down the cut side.

Just cut them, the best way is to move the battens before you cut, I use a quick cutting chainsaw. A hand saw is a nightmare as the slats tend to split. If possible use something powerful and quick cutting to cut them eg a circular saw, sabre saw, big jigsaw or chainsaw. If you use a handsaw use a sharp one!

BTW, rather than buy online, try and find a local sawmill, usually a lot cheaper and farr stronger, the panels I buy are farr better quality and I guess cheaper than those... £"0 a 6x6 panel.

As cajary says use 4x4 timber posts post, preferably 4x1 gravel boards, this way you get the maximum life span from the fence, easily 15 years if done properly. A little tip is to drill pilot holes through the side battens and screw in the panels rather than nailing, easier in the long run if you need to replace a panel or post.
