    Hi all,
I moved into a new property at the end of last year, and the garden was a mess. I'm looking for some advice as to what to do with the ground.
I have spent the last couple of weeks clearing the ground to get it back to the bare bones.
The pic shows what it looks like. It's dry, weedy and full of roots from the trees that did exist till they were cut down.
I would like the area in the image to just be a lawn but would like some advice on the best way forward. What to do next?

    Thanks in advance
    Matt

    Good evening Matt
The conifer/s which were there would have robbed any nutrients out of the surrounding ground.
Your first task is to eradicate the weeds. Either by watering in a diluted solution of weed killer or using a spray-spot treatment on each individual one (mind you, after all the effort you are putting in to hand remove your stumps/roots ... go the diluted weed killer watering route).
To grow a new lawn from seed, the best time is in the Autumn - which, considering what you are working with, is probably the right time. You will want to ensure that you have killed off/pulled out all the weeds anyway. Unless you wish to go the turf route? Either way, seed or turf you will need to keep it well watered - so again, this time of year wouldn't be the best time to do either.
Not sure what the best advice would be for enriching the soil prior to turf/lawn seed, but I'm sure someone who has more experience in that department will be along soon to advise :)
PS: Best ask OH to make that two bottles of Radox  :heehee: (other bath products are available)

Welcome to Gardeners Corner Matt. :)

"M" has got you started but after the weeds are dealt with you will need to dig the soil over to at least a spades depth as it will be compacted. If you have clay soil this would be a good opportunity to dig in some sand or gravel to help drainage. If you can get well rotted horse manure that would be a good feed for the area and also dig in some compost. As "M" has said it may be wise now to leave seeding or turfing until later in the year, but you could get away with turfing now if it's kept watered throughout the summer months.

Thanks for the advice guys. I have started digging over the soil and getting rid of weeds. Coming across tree roots at almost every dig, so it's taking a lot longer than I had hoped. Sticking with it thou and will get some seed for when I'm ready. :)
