Oh kid wasnt sulking when she locked the dog outside .... sulking after she was told off !

Now the dog has done it once, I will be worried she will do it again at some point during the summer. By then it will be too late to replace the plants with anything for the summer too. Plus it wont be long till they all break up for summer holiday and then there will be 4 of them to lock the dog out !!

I know you dont have kids Aaron, but there are 4 here all free to a good home if you are interested

Sam, they also sell some black metal type "railings" in the pound shop. I bought some to place at the bottom of the pergolas for my sweet peas. They would make a nice edging too.

As for children, I thought I had my hands full with two grown sons and a hubbie here !!

So sorry to hear that Sam, just as it was looking so nice as well.

Its not the dogs fault, this Gary Larson cartoon sprang to mind when you said it was being told off:

Temporarily I'd put some netting around it, it might not look nice but it would stop her jumping up.

Well not so angry this morning ..... just sad that its been wrecked :( Think I will have to cross yesterday out as 'just one of them days'.

Thats very true JWK - I know the dog doesnt understand even what she has done and she certainly never did it on purpose. Guess even kid didnt realise what the dog would do when she locked her out either really ..... still cross with her mind!!

Have work today so nothings going to get done with it till tomorrow now. Will have a look on the net during tea breaks see If I can find some inspiration or something!

Meant to say this last night Sam, but how about some architectural and spiky plants? I think the raised bed is big enough to contain them and they'd look good viewed from inside and out. You could still mix a few smaller plants around them in summer.

I would also threaten the children with cruel and unusual punishments if the dog is ever locked out again!

Oh Sam really bad luck but I always say you can't have a lovely garden and have cats/dogs or children you have to work round them!

I have two aged Yorkies and although they are good girls they do tend to lay on any new plants I pop in the sunniest part of the garden, what I have done to stop them is to put wire cages around the plants until they are big enough for the girls not to bother and it does work you will be pleased to know.

You can pick up some cheap netting and rig it up around the side of your planter with canes holding up the netting and this should do the trick after awhile the plants will grow and fingers crossed your naughty fur baby will forget there's something there to jump on and you can take away the netting and just enjoy the plants.

Good luck and don't give up.Hel.xxx.

    Hi Aaron,

Any recommendations for architectural and spiky plants that will grow in the shade ?

Come to think of it .... any recommendations for punishments for horrible teenagers ? :hehe:

    Thanks Hel :)

I have only really bothered with the garden as the family all grew older but you would think kids of almost 18, 17, 16 & 14 would know better

In all fairness though ... no one has told them not to lock the dog outside (they have been very firmly told now though!!). I know sometimes they do lock her out there if they are friends coming in for a few mins to wait for them as the dog gets so excited she jumps over everyone! I just cant believe someone locked her outside and then left the house for god knows how long!!

My neighbours lock their dog outside when they leave the house all the time which not only drives us nuts with the dogs frantic barking and whining ... but I personally think its cruel to do it!! Am just grateful it wasnt freezing cold or boiling hot yesterday - poor dog :(

Sam, get yourself down to Homebase. I got an excellent deal yesterday on some very nice Salvia plants. I got 6 very healthy looking specimens for £3. Probably not dog proof but at that price you can't grumble.

Have text other half and he is going to take me to homebase after he picks me up from work to have a look, see what they have.

Clueless .... the ones you brought - how big were they and did they have different colours or all the purple?

Its not so much saving money now at this stage .... just dont really want to be replacing the plants every week as nothing is going to have time to get established, grow or fill out if they keep getting broken.

They stand about 8 inches tall, with really deep green foliage and striking red flowers. I'll take a pic when I next go out there in a bit. I'm off work so will do it this afternoon.

True, but a bargain is a bargain:) I only went to buy some sharp sand for the lawn, but they were just staring at me and I couldn't resist.

Other half always says the plants are crying cause I am in the shop and they are frightened they will end up with me

    Pah .....

You've just given me an idea. I have ferns on my land. I also have primroses. As much as we try to avoid walking on the primroses, it is not always possible when we are working. They seem to be able to take whatever punishment they get. I even dug one out once and left it to one side for my mate to take home for his garden. He forgot it by the time we finished for the day, and the next few times we went up we weren't working in that same patch. Literally months later, after it had laid uprooted on the sunny bank side for ages, I found it again. Still uprooted exactly where I'd left it, and still very much alive.

    Anything 'bendy' will do lol
