I have had an explosion of this stuff in my garden - no idea why or where it came from even (not had any before), but by hokey has it got itself going!

Now, yesterday I decided (probably stupidly with hindsight) to rip out as much as I could of it by hand, to knock it back if nothing else until I get the chance to dig it out properly; however, the reality is that all I have really achieved is to rip the leaves and stems off and leave the roots in the ground - - so, I now wonder if I have just made it harder to get shot of?

Is there a 'best practice' way to get rid of this blighter?

Unfortunately, FC, it has to either dug up, roots, runners and shoots because that's the only organic way of doing it:dunno:. Like the Dandelion if you leave a tiny bit behind it will grow again.:wallbanging:
A weedkiller based on Glyphosate will also kill it.:coffee::snork:

I did contemplate putting some glyphosate into a container and painting it onto it with a wee brush to avoid overspray onto nearby plants. I will let it come back a bit, and then attack it again

        Thanks :)

I've got it here to FC and have never totally got rid of it. As soon as you turn your back it runs riot again! :doh:I've found the Verdone Extra weed killer is pretty good at shifting it but if you miss a bit....... :)

Its the first year I have seen it here, but it is a mass invasion, especially as it has made its way into one of my big borders and has ran rampant -- so much so, it was crowding out a hollyhock and a couple of others

It will run all over the place but as above dig it out. It will take a bit of effort, I always seem to have some in the borders.

@mr c, don't mention ground elder! My neighbour has it in her front bed which backs onto mine & I've got the dam stuff in there! I've dug & dug it, I've weeded but the dam stuff keeps on growing! I'm going to try some roundup gel but I'm told it's near useless :yikes:. I've just seen @HarryS hae also said its useless :yikes: not sure I will bother within now! I hate the dam stuff my neighbour say I should just let it grow but I just can't! :rolleyespink:

aye Beckie i feel for you, there is no way to get rid of the stuff, the way it grows runners then forming little bulbs which form the plants some seem dormant till the plant next to it dies.
Have tried weedkiller roundup seemed to work but will come back with vengeance, reality is physical barrier think concrete, maybe deep plastic edging then digg out what comes up mind
the bulb type things,on the other hand don't think it would like to be covered with black plastic.
I'm trying to fight mine off with ivy and a strimmer (sp)

This is a photo off a plastic milk bottle weed killer spray shield . So you can mask off the weed if required. Watch for drips when moving it about
