In 1961 The Tokens got to No.1 with this more modern version of an African song. Their version was written in 1939 but the song has been sung for hundreds of years.

It was covered by many singers and folk groups and all made hits out of it. I'm not quite sure why they called it Wimoweh (the word is in parts of the song) as the original title was Mbube (meaning lion in Zulu). It became another big hit when it was used in the film 'The Lion King'.

Miriam Makeba 'Mamma Afrika' (one of my favourite singers) had a big hit in S. Africa with the song a year or so before The Tokens.

This is one of her earlier versions (the picture is of her in later life) and she's singing it in the original Zulu with a Xhosa dialect. The two languages are related (part of the Nguni group of languages from that part of Africa) and Xhosa uses the clicks in the back of the throat that you can hear in the song.

I've posted this in the past. It's a song that I really like and was written and sung by Ralph McTell. He wrote it in 1969 and it reached No. 37 in the top 100 in 1975.

There's an interesting interview with him towards the end of the video. He's still performing at the age of 70.

He selected it as one of his Desert Island Discs - he had clearly never listened to it at all :roflol:

I love that track; I grew up in the late 70's into the 80's, so Ralph McTell's voice was often heard in my childhood - - gives me a warm glow to this day. An incredibly talented man, and one who comes across as a gentleman in the truest sense of the word.

                Enough of that pop nonsense!
                ;-)

I'm a bit of a fan of rock band Anathema. At first listen their songs might sound a bit melancholy, but ultimately they're uplifting.

                  Well now, that's dramatic!

Why has nobody told me about this group before?

I'm going to have to seek out more...
