Hi everyone I'm a newbie to the gardening world and I'm enjoying planting new things in my garden. I'm looking to add some winter flowering plants and I love the pictures of the black hellebores I've seen. When is the best time to plant them so they will flower next Spring? Does anyone have any recommendations of when and where to buy them? I've seen the Black Swan at T&M online but very unsure about buying plants online. Any help gratefully received! Thanks

      Welcome to the forum Poppy.

Planted this summer they should flower next year. Tell us your location and maybe someone can recommend a good nursery nearby you.

Hi Poppy, welcome to Gardeners Corner.:snork:

If the Hellebores are in pots then you can plant them anytime. I bought some Hellebores from Hayloft Plants who sell them singly or in a collection. They arrived well packed and were young plants in good sized plugs so I was quite happy with them.

          Hello & :sign0016: to the forum @Poppy2013.
You've had a great response from @ARMANDII :dbgrtmb:, I tend to leave T&M alone if I possibly can, I've been very disappointed with their plants in the past!
I hope you can find what you are looking for :dbgrtmb:.
I shall look forward to chatting to you on here & prehaps seeing some photos of your garden :)
          Happy gardening :spinning:

Thank you all. I'm in Maidstone in Kent. I only have a little garden and I've just picked things I like and planted them in the best place so its not the most organised ever!

Hi Poppy, welcome to GC. That sounds like my style of gardening too, except they don't always end up in the best place :heehee:. So don't be shy about posting pics, we love seeing other people's gardens and I bet it's not as disorganised as you think

They have some great hellebores thanks. How long did the plugs take to flower after you bought them?

Hi Poppy, well, mine were planted in the late Spring season a couple of years ago and some flowered the following Spring. and some didn't. But by the following Spring they were all flowering. I planted mine in semi shaded borders and they are doing well now. If you want instant flowering then it's the bigger specimens in the pots that will do that......at the cost of an arm and someone else's leg!!
I like watching young plants develop and grow and become a real part of your garden.:coffee::snork:

Oh, No, everyone knows that's not my style of gardening. I plant in formal straight lines with plenty of bare soil between plants, the plants are colour coordinated, and all have labels on them..............

Does anyone have a Hellebores x hybridus (Ashwood Garden Hybrids) Single Ruse Black Lenten Rose from Ashwood Nurseries? It looks lovely but quite pricey so I don't want to risk killing it! It would go in a pot.

Hi Poppy, to be honest, I don't think Hellebores are good pot plants and are happier in the ground. Specimen Hellebores are pricey as you say but don't let that stop you putting them in the ground where they will survive better. I sometimes buy from the small nurseries of Big House gardens as I have quite a few near me. I find they sell a lot of plants from their own collection and borders at half the price of Commercial Plant Nurseries and the National Trust gardens who also tend to be pricey. Keep an eye out in Morrison's plant area as I have bought big Hellebores from them which they were selling a really low prices.:coffee::snork:
