Hi all, just thought I'd update this. My brother has 7 or 8 tumours on his brain and cancer of the osophogus (sp).

He has been in hospital for a couple of weeks but has been let out for the weekend. He is on steroids of some sort which are helping him function. He has to go into hospital next week for chemo & radiotherapy but doesn't know if he will have to stay in for treatment or go in & out. He was in hospital on the Isle of Wight but has to go over to Southampton General for the treatment.

I have spoken to him today & without going into details am very glad I did. Anyway, fingers crossed for him.

Sorry if this seems to be morbid but I just wanted to let you know what was happening in case you thought the worst or that it was strange that I hadn't come back on this.

Thanks for all your good wishes.

    cheers

Glad that they've got a diagnosis. It must be a relief, to some extent, for both of you.

Can't think of anything else to say so I'll shut up.

You should politely but assertively request a referral to the hospital for a second opinion. It's his right to ask for one. I would suggest a stroke specialist to start with as it sounds very much like a TIA (transient ischaemic attack) to me. What ever it is, time is not going to be a good thing in investigating it.

Thank you all very much. He obviously hasn't had any news today cos he said he would phone me. I got a bit upset with his girlfriend cos she just wasn't keeping me updated (I live over 350 miles away), which must have annoyed him cos he phoned and had a go at me!!! I had words with him and it didn't end well but ...... he phoned a few hours later bless him. So all is well between us,:)

I appreciate how difficult things must be for them but tried to explain that I just felt I was being pushed out. Just a text message would have done. Thankfully a couple of other family members keep me informed on the qt. The reason I hadn't wanted to speak to him directly when I was feeling upset and annoyed was precisely so he wouldn't get annoyed or upset! His girlfriend is very good at acting - say no more.

So it looks like it will be next week before he starts his treatment. I do hope it goes well, he's a pretty good bloke really:) Not fair for this to happen but then it never is, is it? Why can't only nasty people die? Yes, I've been told I'm very naivie & soft hearted, I'm trying to get harder or do I mean hard-hearted? Probably both but it hasn't worked in nearly 50 years so.....

Thanks again mates. It is much appreciated.

    cheers

Don't get ahead of yourself by drawing conclusions. I know from personal experience that doctors won't put someone through treatment if they believe it would be futile. My father in law (a good man) dies a couple of years ago of cancer in his throat. The doctors and consultants had a meeting to discuss their options, and decided to do nothing, as any of the usual treatments would just put him through discomfort for no reason. They told us that if they'd believed there was even a remote chance of success they would have operated and/or use chemo or radiotherapy. I take this to mean that if they are using such treatments in the case of your brother, then they are confident that there is a good chance of success.

I learnt first hand that you can't switch off your emotions. You might be able to appear to for a short while, but all that happens is when they do break it they all come out at once. There's nothing wrong with having a soft heart anyway, it makes people like you more and that's exactly what you need when you're having a hard time.

Hi all. Just to let you know again. Saw my brother a few times last week. Flipping heck, he looks bad. Actually took him for treatment (radiotherapy) on Thursday cos his daughter had suspected swine flu! Spoke to the nurse with his fiancee about the mask he wears cos he told me it hurts. Actually told me treatment hurts but nurse said it's no different to having an x-ray, so must be the mask.

He's not the same obviously and I don't think they are going to treat the cancer at all. All the radio is doing is, hopefully, enabling him to be together for a few weeks. He has booked a holiday in September for all his kids/grandkids and I really hope he is able to do it - and enjoy it somewhat of course.

I'm glad we went down to see him and Ray met him for the first time in 14 years! We spent the last night we were there at a club with all the family and it was great, well not in a way, but we all had a kiss & cuddle which was lovely. So, next time I go down south will probably be a really horrible time. Not looking forward to it but so glad I got to see my bro again. Bless him, he's not with it at all - bright bloke before. It's horrible to see.

Sorry, again morbid post but you know me, I tell you things cos your my mates.

    cheers
