Hi have recently landscaped my garden in my new house it was a real mess.

well I have grown a stunning lawn and I have put flower bed on the opposite side of the garden.

I have compost it about 1 foot deep with miracle grow compost. peat free. and on the other half I have used the same compost to the same depth but mixed it with some miracle grow farmers manure.

well I decided to plant two stunning sunflowers they stand at about 6 inches high. well they have lasted two days and now they look awful the heads have started to shrivel up and leaves have started turning yellow. and I am gutted.

one is planted in the compost/manure mix. the other is planted in just the compost and the same has happened to both.

I am new to gardening but I love it so if some one could tell me where im going wrong that would be great.

Also if you start them indoors from seed don't forget to harden them off before planting outside. It would be too much for a young seedling to be planted directly into a border in hot sun. :)

hardening a plant off , is basically putting out in the garden in a sheltered spot during the day and bringing back in to the greenhouse over night and you do that roughly for two weeks , and it gets the plant used to being out doors , you can also use fleece to cover them over at night, keeps them snug.

Then after all that faffing about they can stay out.

Understandable to be "gutted", Kris, but believe me all gardeners experience that feeling every now and then. No gardener has the perfect garden, or knowledge, but have learnt by reading some gardening books and by experience, failures and successes.

Believe me that is the last thing you sound, Kris, ask any questions you want or need to because that's what the GC gang is here for and you wont find a more friendly, helpful, and slightly crackers sense of humoured bunch of people......of which you are a member. A special Jacket and bottle of GC blue pills will be a necessary item once you get used to us.

Question......Did you grow the Sun flowers yourself?, or were they what they call "Plugs"?, or did you get them in pots? I think the diagnosis given by the Gang is the right one, a newly placed plant will be slightly stressed anyway, even in the most heavenly compost, and high heat, humidity, the compost becoming heated due to strong sunlight thereby "cooking" the delicate roots. In those circumstances you can only say........:gaah:
