I'm not sure but it could be a Vinca, it'scommon name is Periwinkle and has blue flowers. It's often used as a ground cover shrub.

Me too, but the way (some of?) the leaves connect to the stems didn't
    look quite right.

You mean the way some of the leaves look like 'baby spinach leaves', rather than having very short, wiry connections to the main stem? (not feeling inclined to go wandering around outside at this time of night checking out the last remnants of Periwinkle in my garden, but there's still a load of escapees at the plot t8 check tommorow).

Yeh i grow it as ground cover i love it esp its towers of purple flowers. I use it in the front garden under the hydrangeas to help surpress any weeds and so the ground doesnt look bare

            I don't consider it a weed.
Having said that it is a wild flower up here as well as a garden plant

It does spread ..but is easy to remove if it grows too quickly.

We used to grow a beautiful pink flowered variety. Ajuga reptans Pink Elf.

There is also a white flowered form..

And ones with dark brown leaves...Ajuga Chocolate chips.
