Afternoon. Well my mangetout is finished, yet I have some more just germinating. Strawberries are almost done, peas didn't do well. Want to sow a few more bits. Got my winter potatoes ready to plant next week.

All of these say I can sow in July. Live just outside of Newcastle upon Tyne. What are peoples thoughts?

    Thank you.

I'm glad it's not just me! I'm a new gardener too and I've got all these things that I want grow but feel it's too late. And the first crops I'm ever growing are being done over winter... feels strange! Good luck with your gardening

(I'll be sneakily watching this thread and following what everyone else is doing ;))

I am no veggie expert, but I would have thought you were a little late for the beans - after all, we are at the tail-end of July, and you are quite a way north... I am not sure you would have enough time for the plants to develop and crop before the first frosts stops them. As you have quite a few different varieties, maybe a little research to find the one with the shortest time to crop, and try a few seeds? Radish - can't go wrong with radish, a short row down every week, to give staggered cropping.

Given your location, I would be thinking more of early autumn sowing, rather than late spring / summer sowing, if that makes sense?

But as I said, I'm a beginner too - just my gut feeling.

Now to step back, and wait for the experts!! @Freddy ?

Well, I'm no expert, but I'd have thought it's a bit late for sowing anything you have there. If it were me, I'd be looking to get hold of some winter cabbage or sprout plants from a G/C or nursery. As Sian says, radish would be ok. I've never been big on catch crops myself, as I've always had the winter stuff ready to go in once certain summer crops are done. @Zigs would probably be able to add more, as he's into this kinda thing.

Do you have a greenhouse? - if so you should get a crop from the courgettes, squash and the french beans grown in the greenhouse if you sow now, but otherwise best keep the seeds until next season.

I think its a bit late now for 99% of sowing . You need a veg planting chart , I have attached the RHS one. Plenty more about just do a quick google :blue thumb:

Just to add, come late September-mid October it's garlic planting time.
I've always found that even if there's theoretically enough time for any given crop, sowing late the plants never seemed to get going the same as those sown at the traditional time.

I just got that cauliflower myself, sowing it today in the greenhouse to plant out when its big enough. I'm going to see how it goes, if it gets a little cold for it i'll just bring it back in the greenhouse. If that doesnt work, well I know better for next year!
