What insect?

    Can anyone identify this insect? In my garden today on the lawn

    Hi Nick

    Those look like mason bees to me. They have reddish hairs on their bodies and the females are larger than the males. They're harmless and live solitary lives. The females lay their eggs in holes in walls or the ground, particularly sandy banks.

    BTW, did you photoshop your picture? They're so evenly spaced out.

    It's a collage, flinty. That's why they're evenly-spaced. I use Picasa for collages
