My computer freezes every day Shiney and I suspect it's due to it's age but it could be Windows 7. I find if I leave it - it unfreezes by itself after a couple of minutes and goes back to where it was. :)

Well, I've taken the plunge - almost - just waiting for delivery.

Have bought a new laptop as Tesco online had some bargains.
It's Windows 8.1 but my IT guy is going to down grade it for me
        to Windows 7.

I shall miss my XP but it's really getting so slow it's hard work to
do anything on it. Hoping this will be better.

Also thinking of getting a copy of 'Windows 7 for Dummies' as I
will probably need a bit of help. They are half price on Amazon plus
a dvd with Office - can't be bad?

          An update!

Ordered laptop yesterday, which was a Sunday,
2.00pm and new one arrived 2.30 today!

Order said it would take 4 - 7 days and it's only 24½ hours!
          How's that for quick delivery?

I am now going to unwrap.

The Asus laptop was returned. It was so cheap looking and keyboard was 'bendy'.
If the new ones are all like that I think I would rather buy a refurbished older one.

              - so I am still looking. :gaah:

Any advice on a decent laptop that doesn't cost the earth?

                Hi Woo
Thanks for quick reply. I will have a google and then I will see if I can get one
locally at PCWorld (or where ever) so that I can actually look at it before I buy.

15.6" screen I have now and think that's ok as I also have a desk top computer in
my other room with a bigger screen . Price range I expect in the region of £300 - £400.
Would I get a reasonable one for that?

I agree with Woo, HP's and Acers are fine. I have two Acers and both have been very good. :)However, I've heard bad reports about Toshiba in the past.

I bought a refurbished Acer Aspire E-11 a year ago on Ebay. Delighted with it as it was just like a new one. Bought it mainly to take away on holidays and interface with my radio gear as it's very light. No DVD drive but I could add an external one if needed and it has only two USB ports.

I bought a made for me pic in a mini itx case, it had windows 8 but most of my stuff would not run on it so I ditched it.
I had win 7 ultimate so,installed that as I upgraded the ssd drive from 60 to 120gb.
I already had 8 gab ram and a 1 tb drive the ssd is just for the operating system, I have just put a Radeon 3D 2gb video drive in as well as Google Earth did not want to run.
Now all is pleasant with videos and photoshop doing what I want.

I will use the free upgrade to win 10 when I hear good reports on it, with what I want to use it for but win 8 was hopeless without a touch screen.

I don't like the Win 8 interface at all, but the GUI is easy to get round if you install Classic Shell - it then looks and works like Win98.
I've installed Classic Shell in this PC (3.4GHz, 8.00GB Ram, 1TB SSD) and on an Acer Notebook (2.58GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD) Both run Win8n and with Classic Shell they look and behave like Win98.
I do have quite a lot of peripherals and some not run of the mill software and was worried that some wouldn't work under Win8 but the only one one that posed a problem was a rather old printer that I couldn't find a driver for and ended up replacing.

As far as Win10 goes I'll not 'upgrade??' until I have to as it has too many issues at present and offers nothing that I need.

                    Worth thinking about - http://www.classicshell.net/

My version of Photoshop (7) will not install also Google Earth had running issues, I found everything else that I wanted worked but photoshop was a must have.
