Goldcrest Conifer Problem

My mother in law has a 6ft goldcrest conifer, which until a month or so ago was in prestine condition but it has now quickly developed large brown areas which are obvious areas of die back. There is no pattern to where they are, they're from bottom to top and on both sides?? The outer unaffected parts remain very healthy and new growth is plentiful.

Any ideas, thanks in advance

 

Sorry Bilbo, but it's unlikely you will be able to save the conifer and if you prune out the affected areas there will be no new growth. Take a look at these links below to see if they shed any light on the problem.

Thanks Sheal, I suspected there wasn't a lot that could be done :( think I'll cut out the dead growth for them and tie in the new stuff to cover the gaps and see what happens
