    Hi :)
I am a total gardening novice and the only thing I know is that I love Acers :) I was very happy when we moved into our house last year and the previous lady left one here in a pot. To be honest though I haven't touched it as I don't want to do anything that might upset it lol. Haven't got a clue what type it is (pic attached).
But my real question is this. Are there any species of Acer which do well in shade/ have little to next to no direct sunlight?
I have a random little patch of garden down the side of the kitchen (pic attached) which get a maximum of an hour(if that) of direct sun a day. I'd love to fill this with a few different species/ colours of Acers but don't know which, (if any) would be any good??

Any helps would be greatly appreciated:)
    Thanks Jess image.jpg image.jpg

Acers like a sheltered site, but that looks more sheltered than most :)
They are also essentially under story trees and can survive in shade, but that looks more shaded than most :)
Growing anything in there might be an achievement. All plants generally need sunlight of some sort to survive. The ferns would always be fine but what is the soil like? Are you not really being a little bit hopeful with your ideas? At the end of the day plants should be planted in conditions where they can thrive, not just survive.

Thanks :) for this. I want any Acers I get to thrive, that's why I was asking for advice. I think it's going to end up as mainly ferns :) lol

If you want to give an acer a try go for a light green leaved one they struggle to tolerate sun so are much happier in shade

The red leaves ones need more sun to get their colour :-)

I think an an aced could be possible there.

I think its worth a try because im all for pushing boundaries.

Hi :) I'm a newbie too, but I've been looking at Acers for my front garden and I think most of them (maybe all) need sun to partial shade (partial shade being c. 3 hours sun per day). 1 hour of sun a day would probably need plants that like full shade. This link might be helpful in choosing some plants you'd like: https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=100. There are some really nice ones, and a lot of them would go in pots. You could do one biggish plant at the far end with a cluster of a few smaller pots around it :spinning:

Just remember if you ever want to prune an Acer don't do so until November, when the tree is dormant, as they tend to bleed their sap if you don't.:coffee::snork:
